  • Seoul’s Jewel Uncovered: Breathtaking views of Korea's urban palaces at Jeongdong Observatory! And don't forget the café!

For a remarkable view of one of South Korea's palaces from a unique picturesque angle, Seoul's hidden jewel at Jeongdong Observatory is the place to be this fall season! Plus, we can't forget the wonderful café from which to view it! Jeongdong Observatory has been a long-anticipated destination for me since I first heard about Jeongdong-gil‘s renowned autumn foliage views. This year, I’m stoked to say I finally got to cross it off my “must-visit” list! In this post, I’ll share my recent trip to this spot and, as usual, dish out some helpful tips and insights to make your visit to the Jeongdong Observatory even more awesome. So, let’s dive right in! Jeongdong Observatory Perched on the 13th floor of the Seoul City Hall Seosomun Building in Jung-gu, the Jeongdong Observatory used to be a storage room before its transformation and opening to the public in 2013. It occupies the side of the building that faces the renowned Deoksugung Palace , offering visitors a breathtaking vantage point to soak in panoramic views of the palace and its enchanting surroundings. These vistas encompass iconic spots like Seoul Plaza in front of the City Hall, the Seoul Episcopal Cathedral of the Anglican Church of Korea, Jeongdong Jeil Church, Cheonggye Plaza and more! What’s even more delightful is that within the observatory space, you’ll find Cafe Darak (카페다락), which eagerly awaits observatory visitors with a selection of refreshing beverages and treats, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the view. To further enrich your experience, the cafe also features historical photos of Jeong-dong, allowing you to take a nostalgic journey back in time to see what the area looked like in days gone by. Getting to Seoul City Hall Seosomun Building Seoul City Hall Seosomun Building is conveniently situated just a stone’s throw away from Exit 1 and 12 of Seoul Subway City Hall Station (시청역) . All you need to do is hop on either Line 1 (the blue line) or Line 2 (the green line), and alight at this station. Once you’ve exited the designated exits, make your way to the narrow alley located between Exit 1 and 12. The building is prominently positioned at the three-way intersection at the far end of this cozy alleyway! To access the building, make use of the west gate entrance. Ideal Times to Visit Jeongdong Observatory & Cafe Darak For the most breathtaking experiences at Jeongdong Observatory and Cafe Darak, timing is key: Autumn Delight: Given its proximity to the captivating Deoksu Palace, the fall season is an absolute must for witnessing the most enchanting displays from the observatory. During my visit on October 28, hints of vibrant foliage could already be spotted around the palace. However, many of the deciduous trees within the palace walls had yet to reach their peak. To catch the full splendor of autumn, I recommend aiming for the first week of November. Address:  서울 중구 덕수궁길 15 Nearest Station:  City Hall Station (Line 1&2) Exit 12 or 1 Let us know in the comments if you will be heading here this November, if so don't forget to tag us in your photos! #autumn #fall #November #Seoul #seoulhotspot #cityhall #colourful #photogenic

  • Are Women's Universities in South Korea becoming a thing of the past? We uncover this issue!

During recent weeks, there has been a growing movement of uprising's against women's universities in Korea. So will they become a thing of the past? We uncover this rising debate and what current students are saying! It is no secret that the birth rate in Korea has hit a global record low, and as a matter of fact, Korea keeps breaking it's own record. Impressive? Well, not really. Imagine schools and university's and the education system in ten or fifteen years time, having to change how it functions, closing down education centers, and perhaps recruiting foreign students in order for the businesses to stay open? This is now turning into a reality in South Korea. For more on Korea's birthrate making a "U-turn": https://www.dojeonmedia.com/post/is-korea-s-birth-rate-making-a-u-turn-we-tackle-what-s-really-going-on In recent weeks there has been rising tensions between Dongduk Women's University students and the administration, as to whether or not Korea still needs Women only education centers. Earlier last month, Dongduk Women's University in northern Seoul held a meeting to establish a university development plan at the headquarters level, during which a transition to a coed school was suggested, citing the decrease in the country's school-age population. "The decline in the school-age population is likely to make it difficult to recruit new students in the future. The transition to coeducation can be an alternative" , the school official said. Let's take a look at this video. Police called to campus Moves to turn South Korea’s Dongduk Women’s University into a coeducational institution sparked a fierce response from the university’s students this month. The protests, which began on 11 November, rapidly intensified, involving hundreds of students, with police called to the campus this Monday. The protests have been supported by several other women-only universities. By November 13th, student councils from five of the seven women’s universities in South Korea, excluding the prestigious Ewha Womans University in Seoul, had joined in solidarity protests against coeducation, including moves at Dongduk and another university to admit male international students in new departments or international sections at women’s universities. They posted manifestos across campus, spray-painted slogans on walls such as "better to perish than open up", launched a petition campaign, and held highly visible demonstrations and sit-downs. University buildings were occupied, and lectures boycotted on masse. Social Media protests: Something to think about This is not the first time a South Korean women’s university has faced such controversy. Similar proposals at Duksung Women’s University in 2015 and Sungshin Women’s University in 2018 were withdrawn following fierce student opposition. The student council demanded the university transparently share its plans with students and halt plans to admit male students. However, the question remains, does Korea need to face the reality of a gender fluid society, and the changing times that it is facing with it's age demographic and low birth rate? Or continue to walk into deeper denial over the bleak situation? • Taboo or art? Korea's changing perception of tattoos is rapidly gaining popularity

With many Korean celebrities heading to tattoo stores and showing off their skin art, we at Dojeon Media wonder: "Are the perceptions on tattoos changing among Koreans?" Read on to find out more! Throughout the world, tattooing is an ancient tradition in many cultures, but the art form has plenty of controversies to go along with it. In East Asia, tattoos have been a touchy subject for centuries , and now, cultural shifts are going head to head with old-school ways of thinking and lawmakers are trying to make sense of it all, this can be seen in Japan and of course Korea. Korea, however has a uniquely interesting case, featuring all the elements of a modern society grappling with tradition and the newer ways of the world. Tattooing in South Korea is on the rise, but there’s much more to the story than the stats suggest.  Our experience with having tattoos in South Korea I personally had two tattoos before moving to Korea, and during my first year in Korea I got a half sleeve on my lower left arm which was completed in Hongdae , Seoul by a Korean tattooist. As a person with tattoos, I have never had a problem in Korea unlike in neighboring Japan where I was told that I could not enter the hot springs because I had tattoos. In my experience, Koreans are a lot more accepting of tattoos than I thought they would be, and I see many Koreans, especially the younger generation with tattoos, most of which are visible. Let's take a look at this video which was created by Youtuber K-explorer. Background to tattoos in Korea Like so many cultures at their foundation, permanent body art in Korea began as a revered and well-established form of artistry. Long before modern borders were established, tribal confederacies throughout the land practiced tattooing as a form of magic protection, safeguarding warriors, hunters, and fishermen from monsters and other enemies. I think this is fascinating, however it can also be seen in tribes which live in the Amazon or places which are cut off from the modern world. This does however reveal an interesting theory about tattooing in general since many similar stories can be found throughout other historical archives. Tattooing typically began as a way to symbolize strength and offer protection in the spiritual realm, but these things were lost or overlooked by more structured governments and civilizations formed. This of course is not the same in modern day, however the reason behind my tattoos were my favorite things, or meaningful experiences or quotes to me, and this does tend to be similar for other people. In its current form, Korean society is a mix of the old, the new, and the futuristic. South Korea enjoys a safe, secure, and highly technological way of life and has finally broken through cultural barriers to earning a place on the global pop culture stage.  With this rapid modernization has come tremendous interest in tattooing, and an increasing portion of young Koreans are eager to get inked. Even some of the biggest K-Pop stars have tattoos, though they must be covered to be shown on Korean TV. This leaves us at an interesting crossroads for tattooing in Korea, with an older generation rooted in tradition clashing with young people excited about tattooing and other art forms. Many of the views regarding tattoos in Korea are not upheld by law but rather by the social norms and pressures that were established for many hundreds of years. Only now are we seeing Korea re-examine its views of tattooing, though many people still view the topic from a traditional standpoint and see it as taboo. For instance, it’s not uncommon to see tattoo bans at spas, gyms, and pools throughout Korea, and people will wear rash guards and sleeves to stay covered. Media outlets and advertisers will avoid displaying images of tattoos, as some still claim they showcase poor morals or ignorance. This was followed by Kim Chang Joo's Amazon Bull Eye , which attracted 28,178 viewers, placing it third. Will they learn to understand the love and warmth they share? Why You Should Be Watching This Korean Film Hear Me: Our Summer stands out as one of the most visually pleasing films of 2024. The cast like Hong Kyung, Roh Yoon Seo and Kim Min Ju excel at portraying emotions, allowing audiences to connect deeply with their characters through gestures alone, making the narrative even more touching. • Famous Korean YouTuber DDOLDDOL comes out as GAY! Plus, how does being a 'gay celebrity' affect one's success?

YouTuber DDOLDDOL reveals that he followed the academic path which was decided by his parents exactly after learning that he was gay in 4th grade. We also dive into the contradicting views that "being gay" in South Korea's entertainment industry means! This revelation, has moved many viewers as the story of growing up as a sexual minority in Korean society can be extremely hard, and as many people know it is a hot topic among many K-dramas and within the heart of Korean society and a political issue. Hong Suk Chun is a right hand man for Kim DDOLDDOL and has been a popular gay celebrity in Korea for a number of years. During his time in the lime light he has broadcast MBCs Radio Star, which has been a huge success. Coming out as gay in South Korea In South Korea’s glitzy, highly manufactured music industry, these kinds of scenes are not uncommon. As long as it’s only for show, that is. Homophobia is still rife in South Korea, where very few mainstream music stars have come out as gay. The country has no comprehensive anti-discrimination laws to protect LGBTQ South Koreans, and compared to nearby democracies like Japan and Taiwan, the country is less accepting of same-sex couples. Despite all that, same-sex K-pop idols regularly play-act romance . On stage, they dance intimately with one another or gaze into each other’s eyes. In video clips, it’s not uncommon to see them playing games that result in them grazing lips, then dramatically recoiling to show that it was all just play. What role does 'being gay' have in the Korean Entertainment industry? With much of the fanfiction about same-sex romance, one of the country’s largest entertainment company, SM Entertainment , began encouraging its stars to take part in “skinship” – or touching a fellow band member, according to Kwon. It was a different approach from the West, where bands like One Direction have strenuously denied fan theories of in-band romance. Even now, K-pop labels sometimes cultivate idols’ homoerotic appeal in the hopes that it makes them more popular in fanfiction, where Kwon estimates 80% of stories involve gay story lines. That, in turn, can increase their profile – and translate into economic benefits. This is some of the ways that mainstream media are trying to accept being gay in Korean culture, however there is a long way to go, with many Christian and other religious group having such as big influence in government and society. Will this change as more popular Korean celebrities open up about their sexuality? Let us know your thoughts on this essay in the comments below. #gaykorea #comingout #kculture #gayinkorea

  • Trump's historic re-election poses uncertainties for the Korean entertainment industry

Donald Trump has won his second term in the White House as the 47th President of the United States of America, so how will this affect the Korean Entertainment industry? We explain! Against all odds, Donald Trump will serve as the 47th President of the United States of America in the coming months. This recent result, will have a global impact on many other countries outside of the US, including South Korea. As we have seen many Hollywood Movies have been made in South Korea, due to the production costs being lower, an array of filming locations and the rise of K-culture. Many people are now worried that when Trump takes office, it may have a negative impact on the Korean Entertainment industry. This is because Trump has mentioned a number of times in his campaign that he intends to use economic leverage to enhance US influence on Korean firms, and enhance jobs for the American people rather than outsourcing to overseas clients. South Korea has also for some time now been seeking to become a world-leading exporter and importer of entertainment and media for a global audience. This has been seen with the K-Wave (Hallyu) which has gained international popularity, and this has also expanded to include Korean TV shows, pop videos and games, many of these are funded internally in Korea, though a vast number are targeted to US audiences. The Korean government considers the entertainment and media industry as a key driver for the Korean economy. Thanks to abundant ICT infrastructure such as high-speed mobile connectivity and diverse purchasing power in entertainment, South Korea has become a lucrative and ideal test bed for new entertainment media and content. So can this increased revenue stay in Korea with the Trump administration? Over the past decade, South Korea’s status evolved from being a consumer to that of a content powerhouse with popularity of “K-Wave” dramas, film, and music. Parasite , one of the notable examples of the globalization of K-film won the 2020 Oscar for best picture and was the first-ever foreign language film to win the Oscar for best picture. In 2021, Squid Game drew fans from all over the world and became Netflix’s most-watched TV series.   The film industry in Korea has grown into one of the world’s most active markets through the development of multiplexes and the popularity of movie-going culture. Hollywood Walk Outs Last year, we witnessed Hollywood walk outs on the entertainment industry, which was an historic event and the first walk out in over 63 years, due to pay and the use of AI in movies. The Korean entertainment industry will also be likely to face similar threats in the next couple of years, with the potential of foreign funds being cut and spent at home. The differences between entertainment companies in the U.S. and those in Korea can be attributed to several factors, including cultural nuances, industry structure, business practices, and audience preferences. Here’s a breakdown of some key differences: 1. Cultural Influences: Content Themes : U.S. entertainment often focuses on individualism, diverse narratives, and complex character arcs, while Korean entertainment (K-dramas, K-pop) tends to emphasize collective values, family ties, and romance. Storytelling Styles : Korean dramas typically feature tighter story arcs, often concluding in a single season, whereas American shows may span multiple seasons with more extended character development. 2. Industry Structure: Training and Development : In Korea, entertainment companies like SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment invest heavily in training idols through rigorous programs that include singing, dancing, and public relations. In contrast, U.S. talent often emerges through auditions and talent shows without such extensive pre-debut training. Management Style : Korean companies often have a more hands-on approach, managing not just the careers but also the personal lives of their artists. In the U.S., artists typically have more autonomy, although management can still be quite involved. 3. Business Models: Revenue Streams : U.S. companies often rely on diverse revenue streams, including box office sales, streaming rights, and merchandise. Korean companies also focus on merchandise and concert tours, but K-pop idol groups generate significant income through fan engagement activities, such as fan meetings and exclusive content. Global Strategy : K-pop has become a global phenomenon, with specific strategies aimed at international markets. U.S. entertainment companies have historically been more focused on domestic audiences but have increasingly sought global reach in recent years. 4. Audience Engagement: Fan Culture : Korean entertainment emphasizes a close relationship between idols and fans , often involving direct fan interactions through social media, fan clubs, and events. U.S. artists also engage with fans, but the relationship tends to be more distanced. Media Consumption : Streaming platforms have transformed how audiences consume content in both regions, but the popularity of platforms like V Live and Weverse in Korea highlights a unique approach to fan engagement that differs from typical U.S. practices. We have see similar effects in other countries such as with the advancements of technology taking away jobs, inflation means that people spend less, and work on cheaper alternatives, however the Trump administration are dedicated to creating jobs for the American people, so only time will tell if his second term in office will affect the Korean entertainment industry, as much as it has been anticipated that it will.
