  • Global Hits, Domestic Misses: Why Some K-Dramas Struggle in Korea but Shine Worldwide

Korean dramas, or K-dramas, have seen a massive surge in global popularity thanks to streaming platforms like Netflix , Viki, and Disney+ . However, there’s a fascinating divide between how K-dramas are received domestically in South Korea versus internationally. While some series may be criticized or even disliked in Korea, they often gain a dedicated following abroad. The reverse is also true, where dramas that receive critical acclaim in Korea may struggle to find an international audience. So, what’s behind this phenomenon? Let’s break it down! 1. K-Dramas That Struggle in Korea but Shine Worldwide Cultural Differences and Global Appeal Some K-dramas excel internationally due to their universal themes and appealing genres, even if they struggle to connect with domestic viewers. These dramas often leverage high production values, star power, and unique storylines that resonate more broadly. Example: The King: Eternal Monarch  (2020) Worldwide:  Gained popularity on Netflix with its fantasy plot and star-studded cast. Korea:  Faced criticism for a confusing storyline and lower domestic ratings (8%). Example: Vincenzo  (2021) Worldwide:  Loved for its dark humor and mafia theme. Korea:  Received mixed reviews due to its unconventional plot and genre. 2. K-Dramas That Excel in Korea but Struggle Internationally Cultural and Genre Preferences Korean audiences often prefer family dramas, melodramas, and shows with traditional values. These may not translate well to international viewers who seek diverse, fast-paced content. Example: My Only One  (2018-2019) Korea:  A massive hit with a peak rating of 49.4% for its family-centric drama. Worldwide:  Struggled due to its melodramatic style and slow pacing. Example: Strong Woman Do Bong Soon  (2017) Korea:  Popular for its cute romance and humor. Worldwide:  Mixed reactions due to its quirky and niche humor. 3. The Role of Cultural Nuances and Genre Preferences Local Humor and Long-Running Family Dramas Korean humor and family-centric narratives often resonate locally but can feel inaccessible or overly dramatic to international audiences. These shows typically feature cultural references, traditional values, and extended family dynamics that may not translate well outside Korea. Example: The Good Bad Mother  (2023) Korea:   Achieved a peak rating of 14.3% for its compelling family-centered narrative. Worldwide:  Struggled internationally due to its slower pace and cultural specificity. Example: The First Responders  (2022) Korea:  Popular for its blend of action and emotional storytelling, with a peak rating of 12.5%. Worldwide:  Limited international appeal due to its local cultural focus and pacing. 4. The Impact of Political and Historical Context Historical and Political K-Dramas Shows that delve into Korea’s history or political issues may resonate strongly with local viewers but fail to connect with global audiences who might lack context. Example: Hwarang  (2016-2017) Korea:  Received mixed reviews domestically and struggled with lower ratings due to its historical inaccuracies and slow pacing. Worldwide:  Gained significant international popularity for its star-studded cast and engaging visuals, achieving strong global attention despite mixed domestic reception. 5. Sentimentality and Melodrama Korean audiences often appreciate melodramas with heavy emotional tones and traditional values. These elements resonate deeply with domestic viewers but can feel overly dramatic or predictable to international fans, who tend to prefer more diverse and fast-paced storylines. Example: Lovely Runner  (2024) Korea:  Korean viewers found the show’s melodramatic elements and slower pacing less appealing. Worldwide:  While it gained popularity overseas for its emotional depth and character-driven narrative, it resonated with fans looking for heartfelt stories. K-dramas often perform differently in Korea and around the world due to varying cultural preferences and genre tastes. While Korean viewers may enjoy traditional family dramas and melodramas, international audiences often look for fresh, diverse content. As streaming platforms expand the global reach of K-dramas, these differences in reception become more noticeable. What do you think makes a K-drama successful in one region but not in another? Are there any shows you love that you think should have done better internationally? This new comeback album has been highly anticipated amongst fans, and the group's latest teaser photos featuring Minjae, Jumin, Sumin, Jinsik and Hyunwoo showcase a cool, charming yet biker-feel attitude. Here are the best picks, LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask , rom&nd Lip Matter, and COSRX Full Fit Honey Sugar Lip Scrub . Is the 10-Step Routine Necessary for Everyone? The 10-step Korean skincare routine isn't necessary for everyone. While it's effective for those seeking deep hydration and targeted treatments, some may find a simplified routine more suitable based on their skin type and lifestyle. The key is to personalize the steps according to your skin’s needs—whether that’s using fewer products or adjusting the routine to address specific concerns like acne or dryness. Time, Cost, and Sustainability Maintaining a 10-step skincare routine can be time-consuming and costly, with high-quality products adding up over time. For many, this extensive routine may not be sustainable. A simplified version, such as a 5-step routine focusing on essentials like cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen, can still deliver great results without the time and expense. Ultimately, whether the 10-step skincare routine is worth the time and effort depends on your personal needs and preferences. While some may enjoy the full routine for its thorough care, others may prefer a simplified version that suits their lifestyle. What matters most is finding what works best for your skin. Do you think the 10-step routine is something you’d try, or do you prefer a more minimal approach? • Why Sinsang-dong is the Best Place for Viral K-Beauty Products in Seoul! [Local Secret!]

If you’re planning a trip to South Korea and wondering where to shop for the best souvenirs and K-beauty products, you might skip Myeongdong and head to Sinsang-dong , Seoul 's latest hub for beauty shopping. This exclusive area is taking over as the new "cosmetic paradise" for foreign shoppers, offering prices much lower than in other popular shopping districts. Unlike traditional shopping hubs like Myeongdong, Sinsang-dong caters specifically to international tourists. The stores here are known to restrict entry to Korean shoppers, making it an exclusive destination for foreigners. Many products are available at a 30-50% discount, which is a dream come true for K-beauty lovers! Key Shopping Spots in Sinsang-dong One of the most recommended stores is The Mask Shop , a family-run business operated by Japanese owners. This shop offers deep discounts on skincare and cosmetics, but there are a few things to keep in mind before visiting: The store is located near Sindang Station  (Line 2 or Line 6). It's a short walk from Exit 1 . Only cash  is accepted here, so bring enough Korean won  or Japanese yen . The staff primarily speaks Japanese , which could be challenging, but you can manage with a translation app. Perhaps the most unusual aspect of The Mask Shop is that it does not allow Korean locals inside! This creates an exclusive shopping environment for foreigners, making it a unique experience. Address: 251-55 Sindang-dong, Seoul 04569 Price Comparisons and Discounts It’s hard to miss the price differences between Sinsang-dong and popular cosmetic stores like Olive Young . Many viral products that dominate K-beauty trends are sold here at significant discounts. For example, Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen , a viral product both locally and internationally, is sold at a fraction of its regular price, making it a hot buy for tourists. Cult-favorite brands like Laneige, Banila Co, Mediheal, Innisfree, and CLIO  are also offered at unbeatable prices. These kinds of deals make Sinsang-dong the cosmetic paradise  of Seoul, perfect for beauty enthusiasts who are looking for great products at even better prices. Though Dongdaemun  is traditionally known for wholesale shopping, it has also become a beauty destination where you can buy cosmetics, women’s clothing, toys, sports essentials, and even local snacks at discounted rates. Many Chinese and Japanese businesspeople visit these markets to buy in bulk, and you'll find plenty of money exchange centers and export offices here! Whether you’re on the hunt for viral K-beauty products or looking for the perfect souvenir, Sinsang-dong is a must-visit on your next trip to Seoul. • Is Korea's beloved "No Brand" actually a "brand"?

One of Korea's beloved budget chains "No Brand" and "No Brand Burger" has been helping Koreans save money for a long time, but foreigners and Koreans alike are curious, is No Brand an actual "brand"? We find out! During my four years in Korea, I have been a regular customer of No Brand not only for the range of products that they, but also for the reasonable prices. This also extends to their fast food chain No Brand Burger which offers quick and easy lunches catering to both Korean and Western palates at an affordable price. So the question is, is "No Brand" really a brand? Well, in the UK and US, there are supermarket discounted lines. In the UK supermarket ASDA their budget line range is called "Smart Price", and in Korea, the big supermarket chain EMART has called their budget line "No Brand". Unlike in the UK, Korea's budget line has its own stand-alone stores throughout the country, which offers consumers convenience. The answer to the question is simply, "Yes"! No Brand, although it is a clever play on words, is a brand, which is very much loved throughout Korea! From my perspective I do recommend trying this brand if you are traveling or even living in Korea, as many of the products on sale in the No Brand supermarket are also made in the same factories as the ones that go on sale for more popular and higher prices brands, they are simply just packaged differently to attract a different budget/class of customer. In terms of their fast food chain, No Brand Burger , their slogan is "Why pay more? It's good enough" and I stand by this. Although their range is just a little cheaper than the Western food chains in Korea the quality tends to be better. This is because all of the orders are cooked fresh once they are ordered. This only adds to a great meal at a great price! My recommendation is that you try the double Cheese burger or their new seasonal burger "The Kimchi Burger" when you visit! Let us know if you have shopped at "No Brand" and if you think this chain is a brand or not! #Klife #burgerchain #NoBrand #Emart #smartconsumer #cheapeats

  • Cultural Appropriation: Why is it so common in Korea, and should it even happen?

From music and dramas to streetwear, cultural appropriation is very common in Korea. If you've ever traveled or lived in South Korea, you'll know what we mean. We discuss why this is the case and why it should ever happen. Cultural Appropriation: The use of elements from other cultures, such as hairstyles, fashion, or dance, by K-pop artists has been a point of contention. Debates have centered on where cultural appreciation crosses the line into appropriation, but we wonder: "Should it continue?" If we take a look at the music video of K-pop group EXID’s tenth-anniversary album title track “Fire” , which dropped in 2022, Hani’s box braid hairstyle was evidently blurred out, but why would someone go to this length or even approve the concept if it was not going to be shown? Their comeback announcement at the time of the video left fans counting down the days for the video to be released, however, once the teaser was shown, it created heaps of fury, and rightfully so. Many fans or viewers took to social media as viewers called out for cultural appropriation. As the box braided hairstyle is specific to the African-American community, using it carelessly in the music video has stirred such controversy. For me coming from the UK, there is a big diverse music culture from Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean all showcasing different styles, images, and dance. However, in Korea, it's VERY rare to find this scene sadly. In response to the music video teaser and the backlash in comments from fans, the company decided to blur out her hair; however, there were mixed reactions to the company’s decision as some expressed approval while others deemed it unsatisfactory and I couldn't agree more with this. I think it is fine for K-pop idols to use or borrow ideas from a different culture, but it is extremely important to be respectful of it and use it appropriately. This only makes the videos more interesting and with many countries around the world especially in the West being multicultural what better way to integrate different cultures and bring them together? I also think that from an entertainment company, their view is more corporate and the thinking is that if they have a lot of negative reviews and less stream time then that will make them less profits, However, we are in the 21st century and the older more conservative generation of Koreans is starting to become questioned by the more outspoken more cultured younger Korean generation. This incident was not the first time Korean entertainment was criticized for cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation refers to the unrecognized or unfitting adoption of customs or ideas of one group or society by a member of another group or society that is oftentimes the majority. There are still ongoing debates regarding what determines the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Also with cancel culture becoming more common these days, I think big entertainment companies and artists need to be very careful about cultural appropriation. • "Kim's Convenience" takes over London's West End! Here's why it's already sold out!

Kim's Convenience , a Canadian sitcom that debuted in 2016 depicting a Korean Canadian family running a convenience store, has overtaken London's West End debuting as a live theater production! We will give you all the details on why this play has taken the UK by storm and why it has sold out! According to Park Theatre's head of ticketing, almost every performance in its more than four-week run is completely sold out, and Kim's Convenience is on track to be one of the best-selling shows in the venue's 11-year history! Kim's Convenience t ells the immigrant story of a Korean Canadian family and parents who want to displace themselves for the betterment of their family. In my opinion, since I'm from the UK, London is the best place for this immigrant comedy to take place, due to its rich history and diverse culture! Let's take a look at this teaser! With the first season airing in 2016, Kim's Convenience has become a comedy favorite for many. It tells the funny and heartfelt story of the Kim family, Mr. and Mrs. Kim. They are Korean Canadian convenience store owners who have worked hard to give their now-twenty-something children, Janet and Jung, a better life in Canada. This single-camera comedy finds laughter in the trials of running a literal "Mom and Pop" shop while raising kids in a culture not quite your own. Because of the diverse background that the UK has become, London is the best place for this performance as many people will be able to relate to the struggles that come with moving to a new country.
