The wait is finally over! Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin, two of Korea’s top stars, are back with Netflix’s The Trunk on November 29, 2024. Gong Yoo, known for his stellar work in Goblin and The Silent Sea, joins forces with Seo Hyun Jin, who is loved for her role in Dr. Romantic and You Are My Spring.
Their pairing has created massive excitement, as fans have long anticipated their return. The drama promises a gripping story and their undeniable chemistry, making The Trunk one of the most talked-about releases this year!
Based on Kim Ryeo Ryeong’s novel, The Trunk follows a mysterious marriage agency that arranges contractual unions. The discovery of a body in a submerged trunk sets off a chain of secrets, entangling Noh In Ji (Seo Hyun Jin) and Han Jeong Won (Gong Yoo).
With its mix of love, lies, and suspense, the drama dives into the complexities of relationships. Its unique plot combines mystery and psychological thrill, keeping viewers hooked.
A little confusion
The Trunk starts with a mysterious storyline that left me confused but intrigued. As the episodes progressed, I realized the drama had a deeper meaning, exploring hidden truths and complex relationships. Although marketed as a mystery, it feels more like a psychological thriller, which might not align with everyone's expectations.
This might be your next favorite if you enjoy dramas like Eve or Remarriages & Desires. It dives into themes of troubled marriages, past traumas, and the eerie workings of a capitalist-driven marriage agency. The unsettling yet captivating storyline keeps you guessing throughout.
Cinematography
The cinematography truly stood out for me. Han Jeong Won's (Gong Yoo) house is beautifully eerie, with its sparkling chandelier and mystic staircase. It becomes a pivotal location where much of the lead pair's story unfolds. The haunting OST perfectly complements the drama’s suspenseful atmosphere.
Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin deliver strong performances, stepping into roles unlike anything we’ve seen them in before! Gong Yoo plays a desperate husband, while Seo Hyun Jin’s portrayal of a lifeless wife is haunting. Their chemistry brings emotional depth, though the plot feels uneven at times.
It could be better!
Some parts of the story could have been smoother. While the parallel narrative style is unique, it might feel a bit choppy for viewers used to more straightforward storytelling. This isn’t your typical Gong Yoo drama like Goblin, so manage your expectations before watching.
Overall, The Trunk is visually stunning and emotionally gripping. It may not appeal to everyone, but it offers a fresh take on psychological thrillers.
Have you watched the drama and if so do you think it’s too much of a shift from classic mystery dramas?
