K-pop star Taeyeon British pop singer Sam Smith released a new version of Sam Smith's "I'm Not The Only One"! Let's take a look at this amazing blend of artistry and cultures!
Recently British singer Sam Smith made headlines when he released his re-recorded version of the hit "I'm Not The Only One" with Korean pop sensation Taeyeon for the 10th anniversary of his first EP album In The Lonely Hour (2014). The lyric video dropped on Friday, August 30, 2024, featuring both English and Korean! Oh, how time flies!
Firstly, with the poster that Universal Music Group curated, I have to say that I love the concept here. The styling with both singers is on point, and the "moody" image shows me a lot of emotion, and rightfully so with the mood of the song that the pair collaborated on. Also, Taeyeon's makeup on the poster looks incredible!
Let's check out the video!
I really love this song, and lyrically I think it's brilliant. That said, I think it was a bold move to add the Korean lyrics into the song, as it is already so well known. Is Sam Smith trying to break into the Korean music industry? From what I know, he is already well-known in Korea, and I think it's great that a British artist is successful here.
Sam Smith's vocals and the lyrics behind this song are emotional and clever, however in terms of his recent dress concepts, and his gender pronoun culture, I am very curious if that would work in conservative Korea and man dressed in a "dress" will take off here? I sadly don't think so.
Taeyeon's vocal ability in this collaboration is also amazing. Since she is loved by many Koreans, I think that this song will become very popular in Korea. I can also feel the emotion behind her voice and I think that she hits the high notes very well, and her English singing is also great! Which I have to say I was surprised to hear.
Quoted in an interview by Universal Music Group (UMG)
UMG said Smith launched the collaboration project with Taeyeon out of gratitude for the continued love from his fans from South Korea.
Taeyeon also said she is "tremendously happy" to participate in the project, and it is a "great honor" to share her talent and passion for music with Smith.
So I will leave you with this: Why and how did this collaboration come about? With the K-wave (Hallyu) taking off globally, especially in the UK, I think more collaborations will come between British and Korean artists.
