Season 2 outlook:
The first trailer for series 2 of Squid Game has just released, which has now thrusted viewers back into the deadly arena where player 456 has returned to play the game once more.
This comes three years after his victory in the deadly children's games Seong Gi Hun, who is played by actor Lee Jung Jae returns. This time however, he is joined by hundreds of new competitors, and as we can see in the newly released trailer he tries to lead them to safely, but the question is will they listen to his warnings?
Let's check out the official season 2 trailer!
Season 2 is a game within a game for Seong Gi Hun!
As we can see in the trailer, it opens as the smug masked guards welcome the new cast of competitors to the competition. The competitors are then dispatched for their first game which is similar to season one: Red Light Green Light.
In the game the player need to make it from one side of the field to the finish line on the other side, while a giant mechanical doll has it's back turned and freeze when it turns around, or face the consequence of being shot dead.
This time Seong Gi Hun who survived season one, tries to coach the players to safety. However, things turn lethal when a player moves after being told that a bee landed on her. This leads to her being shot in the head, this then panics other players who move as well, and then get shot as well.
Probably the most notable and symbolic change is that in the season 2 trailer Seong Gi Huns hair which was red has changed back to normal, though a little shorter. Perhaps this is a hint that he is not as rebellious and enraged as he was in the year after winning the games? The change in his hair, goes to show that the story has perhaps taken an unexpected direction now.
Our Thoughts
We were very surprised with the new trailer for season 2. Instead of it being a revenge story for the ending of season one which was set up, it looks like the coming season is going to be something different entirely. Seong Gi Hun despite trying to help the contestants, did not seem to be able to control them, and it appears that he will be unwilling to participate in a new set of games based he trailer. It looks as if he is an insider rather than an outsider trying to take the other contestants down, which took my by surprise, and is a big shift from what I expected.
Fan theories!
Back in 2022 when Netflix confirmed that the series will return for a second season, Netflix officials have been slowly drip-feeding fans updates about what to expect, including some of it's new cast members, among other teasers.
This new trailer however will offer some glimpse into what's to come when it debuts on December 26th 2024.
Why not check out our other article which focuses fan theories about what may happen Squid Game season 2;
We did previously discuss if Seong Gi Hun would return as a player or a front man, and based on the trailer for season 2, he has returned as a front man, although it has not yet been made clear what his intentions are.
A third and final season is also set to come out next year.
