Bravely battling with stage three breast cancer since 1993, Lee Joo Shil sadly passed away at the age of 81, on February 2, 2025. We honor her memory by sharing her best roles and moments on screen!

Who was Lee Joo Shil?
Lee Joo Shil was born on March 8, 1944 in South Korea, and she started her immense career in 1964, rising to one of the most prominent stars in the country, both through acting and voice work. Lee Joo Shil appeared in big name stage productions such as Death of a Salesman, and Macbeth as well as K-dramas like The Uncanny Counter and action film Commitment.
In more recent years she was in Train to Busan in 2016, and the beloved horror flick starring opposite Gong Yoo as his on-screen mother. In Season 2 of the blockbuster Netflix thriller show Squid Game, she appeared as undercover detective Hwnag Joon Ho’s (Wi Ha Joon) mother.
Despite her health struggles, she remained active in her career, expanding into television and film. She also earned a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University.
Lee Joo Shil sadly died at her family home in Uijeongbu, South Korea, and had been battling stomach cancer since her diagnosis late last year.
Squid Game Season 2
Lee Joo Sil’s character on Squid Game was known for her kind and nurturing personality, and often blamed herself for their strained relationship.
It is not yet known whether Lee will appear in the third and final season of Squid Game, which is set to land on the streaming service in June this year.
