Park Jeong Min and Gang Dong Won face off as master vs. slave in Netflix's new epic film "Uprising"

Based upon the true history of the Japanese invasion of Korea during the late 1500s, Park Jeong Min and Gang Dong Won reunite as enemies on the battlefield, but were once master and slave, to fight for the freedom of Korea from Japan. We preview this epic new film and why it's a must-watch!

Synopsis

An adaptation of the life of a slave relieved of his duties due to his outstanding martial arts skill during the Imjin War (1592 — 1598), Uprising tells the tale of Cheon Young (Gang Dong Won Dr. Cheon and The Lost Talisman 2023), a slave serving the only son of the most powerful military family in Joseon, Jong Ryeo (Park Jeong Min Hellbound 2021). The two grew up together and became close friends, but destiny would have it another way.

As the two grow up in a chaotic Korea, the Joseon King Seonjo (Cha Seung Won Our Blues 2022), abandons his people and flees north amid Japan's invasion of the Korean peninsula. The people of Joseon form the Righteous Army to fight against the invaders causing friends to become enemies in the process. King Seonjo claims the people supporting the Righteous Army as traitors and should be executed. Cheon Young becomes a great swordsman and joins the Righteous Army while Jong Ryeo is on the King's side. Sounds interesting right? Let's see the trailer!

Why we're watching

"EPIC" is the only word we can think of after watching this trailer! The action, set design, costumes, and attention to detail are second to none as we can only wait in anticipation for Uprising's October 11th release date on Netflix. The storyline, although not new, is still intriguing and interesting to watch since during this time, the core of the Japanese army was the samurai. So watching an army of farmers and peasants (the Righteous Army) fight back against an elite military regime in the samurai will be very entertaining to watch!

Elite actors

With a veteran cast, including Jung Il Sung from The Glory 1 & 2, there will be no shortage of talent. Uprising promises to be an adrenaline-rushing historical ride that will keep us glued to the screen and craving more!

Uprising premiered on October 2, 2024, at the Busan International Film Festival as the opening film. Screenwriter, Park Chan Wook, served as the director of award-winning films Oldboy (2003) and The Handmaiden (2016).
