How is Seoul in January?
The vibe in Korea during the first month of the year, is a scene of locals bundled up in their thickest and trendiest winter clothes, to help save them from the burning cold weather. The streets are still showing a festive glow, and decorations tend to stay up until later in the month. Perhaps it might feel like a K-drama scene for some, and January is the heart of winter, which South Korea knows how to take full advantage of it and make it feel special despite the cold.
The weather
Temperatures in Seoul during January, can range anywhere from the warmer 2°C (35.6°F) all the way down to -10°C (14°F). So yes, it is very chilly during this time, and layers, hand warmers and a thick coat is strongly advisable. The bright blue skies, and cold crisp air, and lots of sunny days, make it very special.
Public Holidays
2025, will see Seollal (Lunar New Year) fall on January 29th, and during this time, you are able to experience lots of cultural festivities, family gatherings and a more local side to South Korea. That said, many shops and restaurants do close during this time, and it is advisable to have something planned, perhaps a tour, or a trip outside of the city, as many city workers tend to travel home and leave the busting mega city of Seoul during this time. As a result, trains, buses and flights are often booked up way in advance despite their increased fares.
Usually smaller businesses, family owned restaurants close on Seollal, but convenience stores, malls and big food chains will stay open during the most important holiday.
What should I pack?
Onto the important part, what to pack. Thick, warm and fashionable layers are strongly recommended. Jackets, gloves, scarves and warm footwear that can handle a snowball fight, and hand warmers if you have them.
That said, you are able to easily pick up supplies in Daiso or Olive Young, to keep you warm for a reasonable price!
