Korean or Get Eaten: Learn Korean with "Squid Game" and Duolingo! [Korean Fridays]

What is Duolingo?


Duolingo is the worlds number one learning platform for learning a new language. Duolingo has announced that they are partnering with Netflix's Squid Game in order to help promote Korean language learning through their interactive platform.


So why has Duolingo teamed up with Netflix's Squid Game?


In order to help make this partnership successful a one of a kind campaign including an update to Duolingo's Korean course titled 'Learn Korean or Else' will aim for a humorous and fun approach to help eager fans pick up a new language. The main focus of learning a new language combined with the thrilling high stakes and energy from Squid Game should help learners to pick up some of the language ahead of Squid Game Season 2, which will launch on December 26, 2024.

Duolingo is adding over 40 keywords and phrases from Squid Game to its Korean course, enabling learners to connect even more closely with the series. By learning Korean, Squid Game fans can appreciate the renowned series on an entirely new level, experiencing dialogue, expressions, and cultural context in ways only possible through understanding the language.

Highlights of the collaboration and app


  • Creative


The trailer shows Duo (Duolingo's mascot) as a pink guard which is famous on the show. The backdrop showing 'Learn Korean or Else' will also be used as a slogan on Netlix's ads. In addition an extended music video will also be used to showcase a high energy dance routine thanks to British pop star Dua Lipa and her hit song "Levitating". Duo is leading a high-energy dance routine with guards in a K-pop remix of Squid Game’s Pink Guards as they chase down a learner who forgot to complete their Korean lesson. This sequence will fun on all of their social media channels.


  • Korean or Get Eaten


The music lab connected with Netflix, have teamed up with a K-pop remix on the ominous song, Pink Guards, which you can stream on Spotify. The track "Korean or Get Eaten" uses a convention that threatens learners to complete their lessons.


The lyrics to this song are both in Korean and English, trying to encourage learners to pick up a second language ahead of the shows release. It is also completed with the famous Red Light Green Light game which viewers enjoyed in Season one.


Fans of the show, have been quick to take to social media, to express their opinions as well as showing themselves attempting the new challenge!
