Indie band SURL is taking a refreshing take on British rock and blues for their new single "ringringring"! We explain why it should be part of your summer K-pop playlist!
Now, for me, I think it's great that there is an Indie band in the center of the limelight for now, as it is a breath of fresh air from the usual K-pop genre.
Their second release of the year, after their successful single "Hypnosis," was released in March 2024.
As I come from the UK, and Bristol is my hometown, I am very familiar with the Indie scene and style of music. However, in my four years in Korea, I have not heard the style of music on a mainstream platform as much, which is why this single got me excited!
Let's check out their video on the link below!
"Ringringring" for me, is very stereotypical Indie, from the backdrop, lyrics, and dress code. I liked that in the video, there was a mobile phone being used to make the viewers feel as if they were at the concert themselves. I thought it was a clever idea, as well as showing them setting up for their shows. I think it shows their fans their whole setup and behind the scenes which personally as a viewer is something that I love to see as it makes me feel as if I were there.
The song was accompanied by a music video shot in the style of a home movie. The visual compiles shots of SURL performing throughout their recent tour, from prepping backstage to hitting major cities across the US, which I think appearing for a Western audience is good for his career and will perhaps give him an edge over his competitors in the K-music industry with more downloads and fans.
I also feel that the single is light-hearted and the perfect song for chilling out in the hot Korean summer, so the release timing is great.
