The funny but oftentimes absurd KBS2 fantasy romantic comedy-drama Heartbeat finally came to a close on August 15 as the finale made us fight back tears! We break down what happened in the finale and our thoughts on what made us warm and fuzzy inside and what could have been better! Read on to find out!
*Spoilers!
Half-human half-vampire Seon Woo Hyul (Ok Taecyeon Blind 2022) had a very important choice to make. After the whole neighborhood finds out that he and his friends are vampires, the local neighborhood watch are on their toes ready to pounce at any moment. Realizing that he must kill the woman he loves, Joo In Hae (Won Ji An If You Wish Upon Me 2022), and drink her blood before the next blood moon to survive, or die.
In one final push to bring what little happiness he may have left, Seon Woo Hyul invites Joo In Hae on a beach date to spend the remaining time he has left and tell her that he loves her. On a cute and romantic beach date, the two sent sparks of love all over the screen that made our hearts melt and brought tears to our eyes!
That night, we realize that Seon Woo Hyul has made his choice to protect the woman he loves by sacrificing his own life instead. The scene with his romantic rival, Shin Do Sik (Park Kang Hyun), was a memorable, but sad one as the two male leads reconcile and respect each other's wishes. In dramatic fashion, just went Shin Do Sik is about to plunge a knife into Woo Hyul's heart, In Hae comes out of nowhere to try and stop what is happening. Woo Hyul grabs Do Sik's hand wielding the knife and plunges it into his own heart, killing himself. In true K-drama fashion, tears are shed and words of love are exchanged between Woo Hyul and In Hae.
What we disliked
There could have been more character and background development of the two supporting characters Shin Do Sik and Na Hae Won (Yoon So Hee Ghost Doctor 2022). We would have loved to learn more about Shin Do Sik's "curse" and what "powers" it gave him. We appreciate that Na Hae Won's character was fierce when she wanted to protect her love for Woo Hyul but was willing to give him up when he insisted that he felt nothing towards her. We felt that the ending between the two was too "clean" as she just walked out of his life. If these two characters were focused on more with more character development, this drama would have been much better!
What we loved!
We loved Taecyeon's interpretation of a Korean vampire! If you haven't seen our post about Korean vampires, make sure to check it out! The great chemistry building between the two leads was good, although we felt it was rushed at times. Taecyeon's personality really shined through in this role and it was refreshing to see him in a romantic comedy again!

I looove this series, but watching the last episode really shock me! I was expecting a happy ending. Hoping there’s a sevond season!
It was such a nice story full of humor, and it ended in a complete tragedy... I'm disappointed. We've had enough drama in life, we want good endings in movies. 😭
